Real Flexibility for a Father of Three

Dominik Jasek taught himself to code so he could build a website for his local Scout troop, with no formal training and no idea it would become a career. Today he works as a Front End Developer for Veeam Czech Republic on Kasten, Veeam's Kubernetes backup product, building interfaces that ship straight to customer clusters around the world.

He originally trained in industrial automation and hardware programming before making the switch to software, a shift that eventually led a university friend, already well into his own career at Veeam, to point him toward an opening on the Kasten team. Dominik applied to Veeam twice. The first attempt ended after a rough online assessment test, but the second time around, a four-round interview process built around live coding gave him the chance to actually prove what he could do, and it worked.

"We make solutions together, and we make decisions together."

That's Dominik's own way of describing how he approaches his work, and it shows up throughout his first months at Veeam: a schedule built entirely around his family, a team spread across time zones that helped him find his footing fast, and hands-on ownership of a real integration between two of Veeam's core products.

What Does Career Growth Look Like for a Front End Developer at Veeam?

Dominik has a specific way of approaching problems that once felt too big to touch.

"I've always liked taking a difficult problem that everybody's scared of, and breaking it into smaller tasks, so it makes sense to solve the big problem one piece at a time."

That instinct is already shaping real work. He is currently leading the migration of Kasten's interface into Veeam Data Cloud (VDC), one of Veeam's core products.

"I'm currently responsible for the Kasten UI migration into VDC. I started investigating what needed to be done, created some Jira subtasks, and now I'm working through them."

Keeping the codebase itself healthy matters just as much to him as shipping new features.

"The first big thing I did was upgrade all our dependencies to the latest versions, so we stay up to date and there's no technical debt. That's something Veeam takes seriously here, balancing new features with keeping the codebase healthy."

He has also picked up new tools along the way, including one he had never touched before joining.

"Codefresh was completely new to me when I joined, a deployment tool I hadn't used before. A colleague walked me through it and pointed me to some tutorials, and now it's a tool I really enjoy using."

How Does a Front End Developer Make an Impact at Veeam?

For Dominik, impact means seeing his work actually reach the people using Veeam's products.

We're not doing research that sits on a shelf. We're developing code that's used at some of the largest companies in the world. When I make a change, it's deployed and running on a customer's cluster, actually being used.

What Is the Team Culture Like for a Front End Developer at Veeam Czechia?

Dominik's team is small, growing and genuinely global.

"My manager and I are the only two people on the team based in Czechia. The rest of the team is spread across the world, colleagues from several different countries."

Leaving a team he liked at his previous job came with some uncertainty about what would come next.

"I was a little worried that after leaving a great team at my last job, I might not find colleagues as good again. It turned out everyone at Veeam has been very friendly, and patient too. When you're new and make mistakes, people just say no worries, let's figure it out."

That patience showed up quickly in practice. Stuck testing a new feature on a remote environment, Dominik reached out rather than struggling through it alone.

"I pinged a colleague on Teams, we jumped on a quick call, and we solved it in about two minutes. On my own, I don't think I ever would have figured it out."

Outside of work, that same friend who first pointed him toward Veeam now shares a local office with him, and the two start most mornings with a game of badminton before logging on.

How Does Veeam Czechia Support Remote Work and Family Life?

As a father of three, Dominik is direct about what which benefits matters most to him day to day.

"As a father and a husband, flexibility is what matters most to me. There's no tracker on my computer forcing me to work a strict eight hours. If I need to take my child to the doctor, I go, and I make up the time in the evening once the kids are asleep."

That flexibility runs both ways.

"That flexibility does mean joining some evening calls with colleagues in the US, but it balances out.”

He's looking forward to using a future VeeaMe Day, Veeam's periodic wellbeing day off, on something simple.

"I think we'd go on a family trip together, out to the forest for a walk. Something like that."
