Fatma Begum spent twelve years building expertise in infrastructure and automation before she was ready for something new. What Does a Senior Platform Engineer Work on at Veeam India?

As a Senior Platform Engineer on Veeam Data Cloud (VDC), Fatma sits between the backend teams and the infrastructure that everything runs on. CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous delivery) pipelines, Kubernetes clusters, cloud provisioning through Terraform. She is also part of the on-call rotation, which means when something goes wrong in production, she is one of the people who picks up the ticket.

That rotation is where the impact of the work becomes concrete. Coming from a services background, Fatma had rarely seen what happened to the software after it shipped. At Veeam, the distance between what she builds and who uses it is short enough to feel.

“The product our team worked on, we see customers using it to restore a user or a group if they are accidentally deleted. We get requests and support tickets. You see that what we developed is being actively used and helps in recovery.”

What New Technologies Do Platform Engineers Learn at Veeam India?

Fatma’s first project at Veeam was VDC Entra ID. The team had been assembled in October, the product had to go live by March 31, and the backend was written in Golang. There was one problem: nobody on the team had used Golang before. Not the backend engineers, not the platform team, not anyone.

They learned it and shipped with it. Terraform and Kubernetes, which Fatma had touched briefly in previous roles, became daily tools. GitHub Actions was new to her entirely. By go-live, all of it was second nature.

“The work I had been doing was becoming very repetitive. I was very much interested in Terraform and Kubernetes but was not getting a chance to do hands-on work. This profile gave me a chance to learn and implement what I had learned.”

Learn, implement, and go live in five months. That was the most exciting and the most challenging thing I have worked on.

How Does Veeam India Support Career Development for Platform Engineers?

“You can reach out to anybody and everybody in the organisation and they are very open. Any discussions, any debate, any brainstorming is very public. People can view and give their ideas and that helps come up with an optimal solution because you get different perspectives.”
