Leading with language: how Catalin turned his skill into an asset

“We play to win, but we never leave anyone behind. That’s the secret behind Team Veeam.”

“I’m pretty competitive.” That’s how Catalin Micu describes himself in only a few words. He loves winning and being one of the first people to see a new movie at the theater. But at the same time, he thoroughly enjoys working and winning with others. With that combination, he is perfectly suited for a Sales career at Veeam. We play to win, but we never leave anyone behind. That’s the secret behind Team Veeam.

Thanks to his passion and drive, Catalin has already made his first career move within Veeam. “I was promoted from the Small and Medium Business segment to the strategic team on Enterprise accounts. The main challenge was the scope shift. I went from handling big volumes of mainly small deals to having one of the biggest portfolios within the French Renewals teams. I now work with big brands, so it’s a completely different kind of challenge.”

When Catalin studied languages in university, he thought is career prospects were mainly in teaching and translating. But when recruiters from companies in Bucharest spoke at student events, he realized that language skills can be an asset in many fields of work. “They gave a different perspective of how I can use these skills. I guess what spoke the most to me was their drive and excitement.”

Speaking French is one of the prerequisites of Catalin’s job. “It really does make a difference as I would not be able to connect to my customers otherwise. It’s also useful for me that I have interacted with French people in various projects at school and work, but also just visiting the country on my holidays helped me truly connect with them and understand their way of thinking.”

With the right mindset and his language skills in tow, all Catalin needed to learn when he joined Veeam was how to use it in the Sales team setting. “The volume of information at the beginning was a bit overwhelming. But I expected it to be that way and my trainer helped me navigate all of it. What really made adjusting to my job easier was my team, especially the buddy system. This may sound like a cliché, but they were always there for me, ready to answer my questions and provide explanations when I didn’t know how to proceed.”

When we asked Catalin what makes a great salesperson, especially at Veeam, his answer was very clear: “Resilience. Drive. Adaptability.” For him, that’s the trifecta of a Veeam sales professional, especially if your goal is to bring in big deals. “You have to be able to sustain a high level of dedication which translates to resilience and drive, but you also always have to be prepared to adapt as the IT market is constantly changing and upgrading.”

His advice for new colleagues who join Team Veeam: “Don’t hesitate. It might seem hard at first, but you’ll soon be rewarded. It’s a lot of work, but also a lot of fun and your efforts will be appreciated.”
