“It’s humbling seeing the children enjoying things I’ve always taken for granted.”

Putting disabled kids on cloud nine

Bert, a Senior Territory Manager Cloud, at Veeam in Rotterdam, takes to the sky as a private pilot and flight instructor. He puts his passion for flying to good use with Veeam Cares, our social responsibility program.

“At Hilversum Airfield, there’s an initiative called ‘Wings for All’. Once a year, we take children with physical or mental disabilities up in the air. I’ve volunteered two years running now. I sponsor the flights and Veeam sponsors the hours for me to do this.”

Last year, around 100 children came to the event and 15 aircraft took to the skies. “It’s humbling seeing the children enjoying things I’ve always taken for granted. There was one blind girl. She wanted to feel the whole aircraft, the propeller, wings, everything. Then we went up and she had her nose pressed to the window, loving the experience.”

The irony isn’t lost on Bert. “I sell cloud solutions to customers. But taking the children up is an incomparable cloud experience!”
